More of Sharon’s Skala Stories

03-2006 Skala Update

Rufus (original story here)

Kim is having to be patient and wait a little longer for Rufus. He was ready to travel to the UK in January but it’s proved more cost effective for her to transport him at a later date. It will be worth the wait but in the meantime, she’s back to counting the days.

Metaxa and her family (original story here)

Metaxa and her daughter Asteria have made themselves very much at home with Del at her new dog-friendly apartment in Ratzakli. Homer has taken up residence with the family from the Maribou and Benson has finally moved into his permanent home with Mick & Maggie in Skala (after being fostered first by Antonia and then by Del’s Mum, Thirza).

Rescuing the dogs from their den on the headland behind the car park at Porto Skala was a pretty traumatic three-day affair. Del and Jean caught pup Asteria on the first attempt and Metaxa on the second day but poor little Benson was so frightened he disappeared back deep into the scrub on the headland. It was totally impossible to get to him so the decision was made to leave him to calm down and try again the following morning. Unfortunately, that night we had the terrible storm that caused the week-long power failure.

You can imagine how Del and Jean were feeling knowing that puppy Benson was out there all on his own. Luckily, with help from Sharon, Del was able to snatch Benson the following morning, having enticed him out with gentle words and food. Phew!

Now two months later the dogs have become extremely accustomed to indoor living and long walks on Kaminia Beach. Asteria and Benson have had their vaccinations and the charity has funded Metaxa's neutering. Asteria will have to wait for another month before Del can get her done.

Anastasia Anassa Skala (original story here)

Anastasia has ended up staying on the island and been adopted by Nicky instead of being rehomed in the UK with Paul as originally planned. Antonia explained to Nicky and Paul that the transportation process can be very stressful for cats, especially small ones because extracting the blood for rabies testing from such tiny veins can be painful and distressing (especially if it takes more than one attempt). As Nicky is allowed to have pets at her accommodation and had been fostering Anastasia from the outset, it was decided that it would be better for her to stay where she was.

But the rehoming wasn’t the only thing that didn’t go entirely to plan. After a few weeks Nicky discovered that Anastassia was actually male so now he’s been renamed Tassos (so the other cats don’t laugh at him for having such a girly name). He’s also been neutered via the KATs voucher system.

The Gourgouris Cats (original story here)

Ginger and white mum spent the winter tucked away in the recess next to Gourgouris. Jean and Sharon fixed up a box with a towel in it to protect her from the elements and fed her there twice a day. She is such a friendly cat that she was desperate for love as much as the food. She soon recognised both cars and if either were parked anywhere nearby at non-feeding time she would still come haring over shouting for attention at the top of her voice. Suddenly she stopped waiting for them at feeding time and Jean & Sharon were starting to fear the worst. She’d only ever failed to make an appearance before when she’d got herself locked inside Gourgouris.

Then one day Jean spotted her sitting outside the gift shop a few doors away, opposite Dr Dora’s surgery. The lady there already has a very well cared for Burmese-type cat and Mum obviously decided she could do a lot worse than to try her luck there too. She seems to have been accepted because she’s always there and, even though she recognises the cars when they drive past, she makes no attempt to follow them and no longer visits her feeding station.

Zaro, the black and white kitten, is living happily with Mike in Poros. He says she is a devil cat and hopes that neutering will calm her down. He failed to catch her on his last attempt to take her in for the op so it looks like an ongoing battle of wills!

Charlie (original story here)

Sadly Charlie didn’t make it, though Sharon gave him 3 very pampered months before he ended his days. His snotty nose wasn’t a stubborn cold but nasal fungal disease and no attempts to treat the condition had any effect.

When the time came, Jean took him to be put to sleep and Del gave him a final resting place in her garden, overlooking Kaminia beach where Sharon walks her dog Aliti every afternoon.
