2003 Dec Sunday Roast

Living on a Greek island is fantastic but it does have its shortcomings. For example, it’s not often you get the chance of a traditional Sunday roast ,followed by pudding and custard. Most Brits have luxury parcels sent from England containing mushy peas, custard powder, Yorkshire pudding mix etc. These items cannot be bought in Kefalonia, and unless you’re a good cook you tend to go without. Because of these K.A.T.s decided to run a Sunday roast day in the hope of raising more cash for the charity.

Before the jumble had been thought of and agreed (held on the 6th December), the committee had set a date for the Sunday roast day which was to be held on the 7th December. Once again, we had the pleasure of using the Bouganvillia Apartments, and as long as the weather was good, we could cater for fifty people. In hindsight, volunteers agreed it was not a good idea to have two fund raising events in one weekend, as the work involved was too much.

Flo teaches Dave to clap.

The jumble sale had taken its toll from even the youngest and fittest volunteer, and at the end of the day every one went home to recover. All except Pat, Karen and Jen, their work had only just begun. Despite being up before seven in the morning, on their feet all day running around, they were left with the job of cooking fifty starters, roast dinners and deserts. All three women spent Saturday night slaving away in the kitchen, not knowing exactly how many people would turn up and what to expect.

Sunday morning the volunteers were up and about bright and early. The food was taken to the Bouganvillia, tables were laid, and the bar was set up. Pat and Karen continued to organize the food, their job was to dish it out. Jen was the official dishwasher and her husband Pete became a bar man for the day as well as events photographer (not bad for paramedics). Dave organized the drinks, helped run the bar, and sell raffle tickets and craft items left over from the jumble. Three volunteers accepted the job as waitresses, none of whom had had experience.

Carol, Jayne and Claudia (above) made sure every customer was greeted, seated and fed. They also had the job of taking orders as a choice of meals and deserts were available.

The weather was holding up and things seemed to be running to smoothly. We estimated that not all the guests would turn up together and that we would manage to keep everyone happy with the service. Spirits were high, guests were coming in slowly, and drinks were going down quickly.

Then all of a sudden large groups arrived at the same time, we were short of seats and had to ask people who had eaten to sit at the bar. The heavens opened and the table’s set up outside was flooded. On top of that we had run out of custard and two of the four deserts on offer. Jen’s tiny sink area wasnt big enough to swing a cat in, and we ran out of dishes. The kitchen staff could only cope with eight orders at a time but the three waitresses were asking for that many each. For at least an hour every one was meeting them selves coming back and we thought the nice organized atmosphere went out the window. Then the meals stopped, everyone had eaten and decided to make there way to the bar.

Bill and Yvonne brought their clan.

Whilst the volunteers were running around like headless chickens all the guests were having a great time. Constant praise was made of the high standard of food and service, and many requests were made for more Sunday roast days.

The day was a big success and we made 366.60 Euros for the charity. It has been decided to run the Sunday roast day once a month, but we hope to have an indoor venue that seats more people next time.

Comments received on the day:-
Anne and Les from Mavrata (former restaurant owners) said: “The pork was perfect, we enjoyed the whole meal but would like more gravy next time”.

Barry from Mazarakata (tombola designer) said, “considering Jayne can’t cook she did a great job, it was well worth the money and I can’t wait for the next one”.

Floe from Metaxa said: “I had a lovely day and got to meet some lovely people”.

Ernie and Mavis won the raffle. The prize was a bottle of Ballantine's, and we know they enjoyed themselves.

Mark and Adele arrived early and left late. As well has enjoying the Sunday roast they also helped out packing things away. Thank you.

Doug from Svoronata was the last person to be served. Sorry about the child’s portion, but we hope you enjoyed it. We will make it up to you next time.

Pat cooked for 50 people in the broom closet.

And finally...
Pat and Dave would like to thank everyone who helped organize the day, and say “A big thank you to all who turned up”.

Thanks03
