2005 Meni Learns About Neutering

Fotini was taken on as a puppy, but her Greek owner, Meni, was concerned about owning a female dog. She dreaded the thought of dogs sniffing around after her every time she was in season and the recurrent problem of having to dispose of her puppies.  With this in mind she was originally thinking of trying to rehome her.

KATs explained that Fotini would have to be neutered before they could try to rehome her and this was how Meni heard for the first time that there was a way to stop dogs having puppies. As a result, with the help of the KATs voucher system, Meni has now had Fotini neutered and she has decided to keep her. She watched the operation (again, a surprise – she thought it would just involve an injection), asked lots of questions and read many of the information leaflets on display at the vets.  She now intends to take Fotini back to be vaccinated and has sought dietary advice from the vet to be sure she is feeding her properly.

Another good thing to come from this story is the assistance of Meni’s brother, who is an official on the local council. He has offered to place a KATs collection box in the Skala Community Centre and to display neutering information leaflets there, written in Greek, to try and spread the word.  He has also agreed to explain at council meetings what Jean and I are doing with the stray cats. We hope that if more people understand we are trying to keep the numbers down by neutering as well as feeding them, the poisoners may decide to leave them alone.
