In early February, Jennifer our 4th donkey arrived at Menegata. We had received a request to home a donkey that was owned by an elderly man who could no longer care for her, and had been warned that she was not in the best of health. Unfortunately, she had been fitted with a head collar that was so tight she had difficulty in opening her mouth; this had caused a substantial weight loss. She was also suffering from arthritis severe enough to make walking very difficult and painful for her.
Now, less than a month later, she is walking without pain and is gaining weight, though her food still has to be cut into very small pieces.
Both Carole and I thought we would be burying her within a few days, so we contacted the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, and I can’t thank them enough for the help they gave us. They were so supportive and gave good advice, although the lady I had been spoke to admitted she did not think the prognosis was good.
We already had some of the painkillers that they recommended, as Arthur had been suffering too, and Marion from Zakynthos, who came earlier in the year to attend to the other donkeys teeth and hoofs, had already sent some for him.
Greek Animal Rescue helped yet again, and sent out a supply of the pain killing drugs that she needed - where would we be without all the groups that are waiting on the telephone to support organisations such as ours? Thank you is not enough.
I hope you enjoy the pictures of the donkeys enjoying some sunshine - and hay of course!
Pat.
