Animals in our Care

Freeway and Shadow

D14

Freeway and Shadow were dumped in Skala before the beginning of the tourist season (2006).  They are both extremely nervous as many locals did not want them there, constantly chasing them away and complaining about their barking keeping them awake at night.  In September, Gill was staying in rooms nearby and made the commitment to take both dogs to the UK and give them a home, even though money is tight and she needs help fundraising to get them there.

A Greek couple who had been feeding them tried unsuccessfully to catch them and after Gil went home Sharon took over the job.  The idea was to earn their trust over a period of time by feeding them twice a day but the luxury of time was not on our side as they came under threat of being shot to get them out of the way.  After many abortive attempts over several weeks, Sharon eventually caught them with a hefty dose of tranquilisers in their food and they are now at Villa Jomar learning how to be around people.

They are both still extremely nervous and it will take a very long time before they can be rehabilitated as proper pets.  Freeway has, however, had a much needed shave and looks a lot more respectable without all his knots and the rubbish caught up in the tangles.  Shadow has finally been neutered and is slowly beginning to trust Pat.  She is even beginning to stay closer and follow her around a bit.  Gil, meanwhile, is busy fundraising in the UK to help her with the costs and waiting patiently for her new pets.

23th December 2007

Freeway has now been successfully homed in Germany and has settled very well.  Shadow is now living in the house to try to gain her trust to enable her to be homed too.
