Dec 2003 Street Collection

I have to admit that when fund raising volunteers decided to hold a street collection on the 20th December, (something that isn’t very common on Kefalonia) some of us were not expecting it to be a great success.

Still, operating on the premise of “nothing ventured, nothing gained”, our five intrepid Mummy Christmases set out for Argostoli at 7.45 on Saturday Night. They thought it would be a good idea to attract a bit of attention first, so piled into Pat’s Atos (borrowed ‘specially for the occasion, because it’s red) and drove around town with the windows down, singing Christmas songs to the accompaniment of the cassette player.

The girls spent over three hours tramping the streets of Argostoli, and caused quite a stir, especially when they began stopping cars and demanding money with menaces.

It has to be said that most of the locals were somewhat bemused by the whole thing, and the girls met reactions ranging from the downright hostile, through puzzled indifference, to genuine enthusiasm.

At about 10, they sent us (the husbands and boyfriends) a text message to say that they would arrive at the agreed “finish line” in about 10 minutes. This was the Alexander Restaurant Bar in the main square, where we guys were doing our bit propping up the bar and commenting on how cold it was outside.

By now though, the girls had got carried away with the thrill of the chase (and for some poor Greeks, it was a chase) so it was twenty to twelve when they finally breezed in, flushed with success. Jayne was convinced that they had collected a good sum, so we all had pizzas and a few drinks to celebrate.

On the way home, somebody was stopped and Breathalyzed. The police couldn’t get the Breathalyzer to work, so his girlfriend very kindly sorted it out for them. In the event, he was slightly over the limit, so the police allowed him to drive back to Argostoli, where he drank a bottle of water and ate a pizza. After this, the result was much more satisfactory.
