Diary 2004-01

08/01/04
So far this month has been really busy, we have been back and forth to the vet with vaccinations and neuters, and with the weather being so wet daily cleaning is a nightmare. This coming week I am starting on getting all the young cats neutered, Monday will be 4 of the boys and hopefully 4 more on Thursday, the last thing we need is more kittens! At the last count we had about 20 that will be ready in January and February.

We have had two dogs neutered this week, Athina and one from Kourkoumelata, so that is a positive move. 13 puppies have been vaccinated so far this month. We have several puppies fostered out at the moment as we have no more space. Antonia has 6, and Ellen has three at the moment, with Brigitta fostering another one.

We know of three that have been offered homes in Germany, and Gaby is doing the home visits to make sure they are suitable owners. Our aim is to take about 12 puppies at the end of February, and Sonny is going to Gisela, I am not looking forward to parting with him, and if he would just stop chasing cats I would keep him, but it is not going to happen.

David has been busy fencing off our front area for a puppy run, if it works we can keep the little devils out of the house, with 8 of them it can be a bit of a nightmare: 4 are not house trained yet – YUK!. My dad is not too happy as he has to go the long way round now to get into our house.

What a mixed couple of weeks, we have had the flu, that made things a bit hard, but with help from friends we coped. I have definitely decided that I am not cut out for this work.

We had the offer of 4 homes for kittens last week, and I hated to see them go; I would love to keep them all. Athina and Feevo have gone to their new home, and I miss them so much - no more Athina falling off the back of the sofa in her sleep: she never woke up until she hit the floor! She did this about three times a day and never learnt. The cats were pleased to see Feevo go, they were being chased so much when he got better, but I miss his friendly little nips for attention. We are still unsure of what we will do with Sonny, he has been a lot better with the cats lately, and that makes it harder to decide: do we keep him or home him? He would be so happy with his own family, and lots of walks and lots of love, he is a very good dog very well behaved - more on that when we have made our final decision.

We have had a sad time when we lost Anna, it was such a shock, and so quick, we find it so hard to cope with the bad parts, it never gets easier. Little Mo is still hanging in there, we are having to operate strict habits with the other three little ones but they are all doing very well, no signs of sickness etc. They are so baffled by the fact that they are not allowed into the house, we carry them from their pen into the day run, and back again at bedtime.

We have had some good news though, 9 puppies have been offered homes in Germany, and they will go in February, with luck there will be more homes offered as we would like to make it 12 if possible

We are planning to go again in March, and on that occasion will take some dogs from other parts of Greece to be collected at the Dutch border to go to their new homes in the UK.
