Diary 2004-09

This summer has been incredible, we have had so many visits from people we have only known via e-mail contact; it is so good to be able to put faces to the names. Thanks to all those who visited and have supported us since the beginning.

Thanks to Tanya, who completed her sponsored slim, and actually came personally to hand over the proceeds, this photo shows her when she visited here. She did really well, and we will put the money to good use.

Just look at the before and after pictures of Tula, the beloved and spoilt madam who was adopted by Kathy and Pete, a happy ending or what? When Kathy and Pete called to see us last month, it was so obvious that Tula means the world to them, and I am very pleased to report that she is ruling their lives as she ruled ours!

We were a little worried early in the season as no kittens had been brought in… we must be mad! Now we have about a 15 of them, and they all came within a month of each other, so it’s back to the bottles and chasing them off the work tops again, but they do give us hours of fun and entertainment.

We have gained a blind kitten who is practising to be as good as Gerry, another with its back leg missing, Stumpy, but the others are all whole and fit. We are now up 46 cats and kittens, but during the day all the big ones go about their business and find somewhere cool to sleep the day away.

Everyone who met Gerry this summer was amazed at how he copes, we spend a lot of time rescuing him from the roof of the cattery, and chasing him back down the drive. Having no eyes does not stop him!

We have our first volunteer helper, Elaine, she is brilliant and it makes such a difference - photo’s later. Ann and Brian who are here on holiday have also spent a few days cleaning and kitten feeding, it is such a great help to have some practical assistance and both girls are very experienced. Elaine works at a veterinary hospital in Dublin and Ann works with a cat rescue charity in the UK. Brian has fallen in love with Stumpy and his brother, Itsy, and he is considering getting them passports and taking them to his home in the UK.

Unfortunately, we are no further forward with the permission to build a shelter - we are still waiting for the forestry department to visit the site; well, this is Greece, and it does tend to be a bit slower than we are perhaps used to. The house is nearing completion, and a set of quarantine kennels has almost been completed on our land, but we will have to use them for our dogs until the shelter is given the go ahead.

Stop Press. Another 6 kittens have just arrived here, about 11 days old and very, very noisy! Antonia is back on the bottles (feeding bottles, that is!) as well, with two puppies, both about 3 weeks old and so lovely, just call us crazy.
