One day when we were driving to Argostoli we saw a poor dog on the side of the road, with a serious leg injury, It was a big open wound, with gangrene in the leg. We went to the vet, and it it was there that, for the first time, we met Antonia, from the Animal Trust. She offered kindly funding for the medicine and treatment of the dog.
The wound on the leg must have been very old, probably from an early car accident, the bone was broken in many places and now had grown together in a way that the dog couldn’t bend the leg. The reason why the wound in one part of the leg still was open was because of a bone piece that came out from the leg in the open. After the bone piece was removed, together with medication, the wound started to heal nice. Although he was crippled, he didn’t bother at all, it was no problem for him to jump from rock to rock, in such way, that even we couldn’t follow. He was all round a very happy dog. While all this was happening, we had a surprise visit from a horse!
 Since we at the time already had 3 dogs, at our place, was the staying for the dog we found, very limited, so we had to find him a new owner. We named him from the beginning Hati, -from the Germanic mythology, a guardian of the human world.
We got lucky, we found an owner, not on Kefalonia, but in Poland - more than 1500 km away. Now the only chance, was a truck that we knew, will go almost in the same direction. So we went with the dog to meet the driver. He new about it earlier, but finally he said that he don’t want to do it. We couldn’t take NO for an answer, so after 30 min with very good arguments, the driver finally agreed. And that was a very nice decision of him.
On his way, one night when the he was sleeping, some somebody cut up the carriage rug in the side of the truck, to steal the goods! Hati heard that and started to bark. The thieves heard the dog, and ran away. When the driver woke up it was all over, and thanks to Hati nothing got stolen. When Hati reached the destination, he was already very famous, many people heard the story already. They even started to argue who deserved to have the dog now! When we called, to ask for him, everybody was enraptured, they said that it was indeed a very intelligent and a very very beautiful dog - nobody could even see that he was crippled.
