More of Arek’s Rescue Tales

Lei-Kung the Falcon

Melisani Cave/Lake was one of the first places we went to after we moved to Kefalonia. To our surprise what met us there was a small, falcon barely fledged. He had obviously fallen down from the nest and into the lake. Nobody knew how long time he was in the water, somebody had taken him out and now there he was, standing in a big plastic bowl, in front of the entrance to the boats, without any chance for his mother to save him.

Everybody was just walking by; we could not bare this sight, so we took him with us. It was not easy to drive with a big bowl, a bird, and two persons on a rented motorbike, and go where? There is no place on the island where it's possible to deliver a small bird, or persons that know what to do with it. We were running short on time, so we took him home and in the same time gathered the most necessary information such as feeding etc. From that moment we spent all our time on him.

It difficult to get answers to the many questions we had; many specialists didn’t even want to speak to us because, as they said, we did a illegal act taking that bird with us. –“even if it means death to the bird, people should not interfere in such situations”. We could not share that opinion.

Beside of that, most information was about falconry as a sport, but that was not the destiny we wanted for the bird. We wanted to set him free when he will be ready for it, and when he will be able to catch his own food. We named him LEI-KUNG from the Chinese mythology: god of Thunder, which was a falcon (with a similar background).

LeiKung

4 month after, the day had arrived. He told us that in many ways, that this day he wanted to go high into the mountains, and that day he flew out of the cage, and instead of landing on the fist, as many times before, he now flew high up in the sky. It was a strange moment, nobody said anything, because the tears was pushing hard from the inside, but we knew it was the right thing to do. In the night he came back in a dream and showed himself, how proud he was. A couple of days later, and until today (7 months after) we are seeing him almost every time we are taking a walk, From the beginning he became friends with the local three Eagles, in such way that they even often play with each other in the air, and every day since the first day he is hunting with them as a part of a organised group. After so many months we had observed that he learned a different stile for hunting than a ordinary falcon tinnunculus, he is not hunting frogs but in high pursuit, with the eagles, after bigger prey.

It just that some times the eagles have a problem to catch up with him... after all he is Lei-Kung, and through our observation, he thought us many things, since then.
