Dear Pat and Dave and all involved I was very interested to find your web site. We hope to retire to Kefalonia eventually and are building a house near Kalligata, so we shall be pleased to help when we can and no doubt we will want to adopt a dog and a few cats from you when we have finally stopped going backwards and forwards to the UK!
I don't know much Greek yet but I believe kalli means good and gata means cat - so I think we will be living near the village of 'good cats'. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I have attached a picture of a white kitten we were adopted by, during our stay near Makris Yialos this October 2004. We were met by her as we arrived - I think she has the flight schedule in her mind and is training to be a rep! She did a good job at winning our love and was very vocal about telling us she was sad and lonely and hungry. She knew the layout of the apartments and which window to miaow at to be let in. She was also tuned in to the noise of the fridge opening and made a dash for it every time! She jumped on the table and was impossible to discourage. My partner John who stopped smoking that week was very grumpy but couldnt help but smile at her antics.
After the first week of buying her tins of meat at inflated tourist prices and giving her lots of fuss we were chatting to a neighbour in one of the other apartments and realised she had convinced them too that they were the only ones who cared about her! I think she must have had a good season getting fat on tourist love and affection. She is one of the lucky ones!
I believe she has the persistent and affectionate character to survive. I was very worried about leaving her as we were some of the last punters and it was nearly the end of October when we left -but she did seem to belong to the apartment owners rather than a street cat. Judging by the condition of the other cat on the premises (large, fat and resting on the chair in the bar!) I trust she will be cared for over the winter unlike some of the many strays that I feel sorry for.
I am really full of admiration for your work. Chris and John
