November 2003 Diary

04/11/03
Tomorrow we are taking Sonny in to be castrated, that will teach him to move in with us! We took 6 cats to be blood tested today, it was not a successful appointment we only had 4 done, as it was a bit barbaric for them, not to mention traumatic for me.

On Monday I had an appointment with the local mayor, and it was very productive, the law has changed here and the local councils are responsible for the strays, but he admitted they did not know how to go about it, and were grateful to us and would give us as much backing as possible. They have offered labour and some building materials for the kennels and money for food etc as it is available, and I was quite impressed by his attitude to the problem. They have offered to provide a dog catcher if we need this service, hopefully we will not, and perhaps they may be prepared to offer to pay the wages of some labour on a daily basis for cleaning etc. when we are up and running. We will wait and see!

We gained 3 puppies today, they were being kept on the roof of a ladies home, not ideal conditions and they are very nervous, but time will take care of that. We also gained 3 beautiful kittens, (thanks dad), they arrived while I was out, but are very welcome anyway.

Now that it is getting colder we have more of the big cats in during the evening so it is even harder to get a seat in our house. You dare not get up to put the kettle on as your seat will be taken as soon as it is vacated.

We have sadly lost two more kittens, both were very poorly, and very tiny, they did not have the strength to fight the infections.

Antonia had a meeting with the Government vets today and they are very anxious to help us, she has been invited to their meeting on Monday am, and they are going to discuss how they can help and perhaps more importantly how we can access some of this money that is supposedly available for the strays. I will let you know what happens at the meeting. They have said they are looking for an organisation to work with and we may be the thing they are looking for too, mutual benefit to us both.

We have a bank account now, and any donations can be paid in Sterling making cheques out to ‘Kefalonia Animal Trust’. We started the accounts with the money from the collection boxes plus some donations and it amounted to just over 1,000 Euros. If you know of anyone that would like to sponsor an animal for £1 per month please tell them about us, if we can get enough sponsors we can do so much this winter.

We have the Ithaka weekend this weekend and I leave for the UK on Wednesday for 4 days, so will produce another newssheet after I return. We will have a website very soon, and this will be posted on there every week or two.

If anyone has any odd balls of double knitting wool we would welcome them, there are a number of ladies who knit and crochet cat blankets for us, and they have now run out of wool.
