Taking an Animal to the UK

Over the season many people find an animal that they want to adopt, and they continue to support it and make arrangements to get it back to the UK, these are the lucky ones. However, in the past, several people have asked that we take dogs and cats and that they are prepared to pay all the costs, once back in the UK they conveniently forget about the animal. This is very unfair, as the boarding kennels then have the problem with trying to find a home for the animal and also loss of revenue due to a kennel or cattery being used.

Please consider all the facts before deciding to go ahead with the adoption.

  1. Ensure the animal is not an owned animal - ask in the shops, tavernas, etc.

  2. The animal will have to complete a quarantine period of 6 months from the date of the rabies blood test.

  3. Quarantine can be done in the UK or here on the island, or part quarantine here and part in the UK.

  4. Bear in mind the cost of this procedure: vaccinations, microchip and blood test are the first costs during the first month, providing the animal is over 3 months old. Additional costs are the kennelling fees.

  5. When the animal is 6 months old there is the cost of neutering this is approximately, 30 Euros for a male cat, 60 Euros for a female cat, 100 Euros for a male dog and up to 140s Euro for a female dog - these prices only approximate.

  6. Any animal can be flown to the UK. Out of season this has to be via Athens so there are two flights to pay for, and because of the delay at Athens between flights there is cost for the representative for care of the animal and the transfer to the UK flight. During the season some of the airlines will fly animals directly to the UK and this is a much better way. In 2007 it cost one owner £500 approximately to fly a cat back directly from Kefalonia and that does not include the cost of the Sky kennel, but includes the cost of the company that takes responsibility for the animal during the flight etc.

We travel back to the UK twice a year and often take animals that have completed their quarantine, but we can never promise to do this for you, but we make every effort to fit in with completed quarantine times.

The average cost for the quarantine period and the vet care, etc.,. is around 1,750 Euro so consideration must be given to this, plus the fact that it is a long term commitment prior to the animal arriving into your care.
