The Charity Shop
For the second winter running we opened our charity shop, based at Maya's gift shop in Skala, in early December 2010, with racks heaving with second-hand and nearly new and new clothes, as well as shoes, bags, assorted bric-a-brac and books. Open only three days a week for four months, Sheila, Ellen and Jean managed to take over €2,000, which was quite an achievement considering prices ranged from 20 cents to 3 euros! Thanks to donations from the British community, the shop was kept very well-stocked for our regular shoppers, who quite often were waiting at the door for us to open! Now closed for the summer, the clothes have been sorted and six sacks of clothes have been donated to the old people's home in Argostoli but there is still be plenty left to sell when we open again this coming winter – and no doubt there will be more clear-outs by the British ladies here on the island.
Monthly Quiz nights at Libra Bar
Throughout the winter we ran a monthly Fish'n'Chip Fun Quiz Night at Libra Bar in Lourdas, charging a mere €1 entry fee. Liz and Geoff fed us with a delicious choice of meals, as well as generously offering Sunday Lunch for two people as raffle prizes. Barracking of the quiz mistress and questioning of scores was the norm but the After Eights were a hotly contested first prize! It was all for fun and raised the grand sum of €336 for the Charity.
Dinner and Live Music at Andromeda
Thanks to the generosity of local singer and KATs supporter Jerry Hollis, who offered the Charity his service for free, we had a night to remember at The Andromeda Centre at Lourdas, on the 12th of March. It was the perfect venue, with over 150 people comfortably seated and served a great meal by Kostas and his staff. We were entertained to a wonderful display of traditional Greek dancing by a troupe from Vlahata, however, when Jerry Hollis took to the stage everyone took to the floor – he sang his heart out and we danced, and danced and danced, and made €528! What a night, we can't wait to repeat it next year!
The Big Bazaar at Skala
After months of preparation and last minute baking, we held our annual Big Bazaar on the 3rd of April, to round up the 2010/11 winter fundraising. Stalls included home-made cakes, pastries and preserves, handicrafts, bric-a-brac, tombola, pet's toys and accessories, plants, children's clothes and toys, books & DVD's, clothes and of course, the raffle. A beautiful sunny day brought crowds of friends and supporters to browse and buy, and the ladies on the refreshment stall did a brisk trade in serving teas and coffees to all. By the end of the day we had made the fantastic sum of €1,600.
Finally, we would like to thank Pat and Geoff from Markopoulo, who collected €215 from the sale of fresh eggs and entry fee to their Garden Parties.
